QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: Everything You Need to Know
QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is a native macOS application designed specifically for Apple users who want the power of Desktop accounting without running Windows or using a virtual machine. Here is everything you need to know before purchasing.
What Is QuickBooks Mac Plus?
QuickBooks Mac Plus is Intuit's dedicated Mac edition. Unlike QuickBooks Online (which runs in any browser), Mac Plus is a downloaded, locally installed application optimized for macOS — including support for Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2, M3).
System Requirements
- macOS 12 Monterey, 13 Ventura, or 14 Sonoma
- Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or Intel Core processor
- 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB recommended
- 2.5 GB free disk space
- Internet connection required for activation only
How It Differs from Windows Desktop
QuickBooks Mac Plus has a slightly smaller feature set compared to the Windows editions. It does not support some advanced inventory tracking features and lacks a few industry-specific reports available in Premier Plus. However, for most small businesses — invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, payroll, and tax reporting — Mac Plus is fully capable.
“I have been using QuickBooks Mac Plus for three years and it handles everything my photography business needs — invoicing, expenses, and quarterly taxes. The interface feels right at home on macOS.”

Can You Share Files with Windows Users?
QuickBooks Mac company files (.qb2024) are not directly compatible with Windows Desktop files (.qbw). If you need to share a company file with an accountant using Windows, they will need to use QuickBooks Online Accountant or you will need to export reports as PDFs or Excel files.
