Is QuickBooks Free? Is There a Free Version of QuickBooks?
Short answer: QuickBooks is mostly paid software, but there is a limited free option and a free trial. Here's exactly what you can get for $0 and where the limits are.
The Free QuickBooks Plan
Intuit offers a free plan within QuickBooks Solopreneur, aimed at people just starting out on their own. It doesn't need a credit card, but it's deliberately small: you can connect one bank account, send a couple of invoices and one estimate a month, upload a few receipts, manage one 1099 contractor, run a handful of core reports and track a few business trips a month.
That's enough to try QuickBooks for a side business. Once you send more than a few invoices a month, you'll outgrow it.
The 30-Day Free Trial
First-time QuickBooks Online customers can usually choose between a 30-day free trial and a discount on the first few months. The trial gives you the full features of the plan you pick, so it's the best way to test whether QuickBooks fits your business. If you don't cancel, it turns into a paid subscription, so set a reminder.
Is QuickBooks Desktop Free?
No. There has never been a free version of QuickBooks Desktop. Every Desktop edition — Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enterprise — needs a paid license or subscription. Be careful with websites offering "free QuickBooks Desktop" downloads or cracked versions: they are illegal and a common way to spread malware that can steal your financial data.
Free Alternatives to QuickBooks
If you need free accounting software long term, tools like Wave or a well-built spreadsheet can cover basic invoicing and expense tracking. They lack many of QuickBooks' features, and moving to QuickBooks later takes some work, so choose based on where your business is heading.
- QuickBooks Solopreneur free plan — free forever, but heavily limited
- QuickBooks Online 30-day trial — full features, then paid
- QuickBooks Desktop — always paid, no free version
